As the capital of Turkey, Ankara is the center of the Turkish Government, and houses all foreign embassies. Strategically located at the center of Turkey‘s highway and railway networks, and serves as the marketing center for the surrounding agricultural area. After the Ottoman Empire was defeated in World War I and during the Turkish War of Independence, Ankara gained importance again. The city became the capital of the newly founded Republic of Turkey in October 13, 1923.
